Winter is one of the most magical seasons in Washington! The sunrises just hit differently and the snow covered mountain peaks are absolutely stunning! While winter in Washington can feel long, getting outdoors is the perfect way to embrace its beauty and support your physical & mental health. Here’s a list of some incredible winter hikes in Washington State!

WHAT TO BRING

Before you hit the trail, make sure you’re prepared! What you wear and what you bring can make all the difference. Here are a few essential items I always take on any winter adventure!

• 🧊 Microspikes: Always keep a pair of microspikes in your backpack! Slip them on anytime you need extra grip on icy or snowy surfaces.
• 🥾 Gaiters: Gaiters help prevent snow and dirt from getting into your boots so your feet stay warm and dry! Such a game changer!
• 🆘 Emergency Blanket: One of those just in case items that could totally save your day. It is ultralightweight and can also be used as a shelter.  
• ♨️ Electric Hand Warmers: Electric hand warmers are an absolute game changer for hiking in cooler weather! This rechargeable hand warmer provides 8 to 20 hours of warmth, depending on the heat setting.  
• 🔦 Headlamp: Daylight hours are shorter in the winter, so having a reliable headlamp and extra batters is essential.  
• 🧥 Insulated Jacket: This puffy jacket from Akova is super lightweight and ridiculously warm.
• ☕️ Thermos: There’s nothing better than enjoying a hot cup of coffee, cocoa or even soup on the trail. I love this one, it keeps my drinks piping hot for hours and is completely leak-proof!
• 📱 Portable Charger: I can’t tell you how many times this has saved me! It’s compact size makes it great for portability and charging on the go.  
• 🎒 Daypack: This is my favorite daypack by Osprey Packs! It’s super breathable and can be adjusted to your torso length.    
• 🧦 Hiking socks: Having the correct socks can help prevent blisters. These ones are my favorite and have held up well over many years!

PREPARE FOR YOUR ADVENTURE!

It’s always a good idea to check recent trail reports on AllTrails and do a little research before you go! I also like to keep an eye on the avalanche forecast. More info on avalanche forecast HERE.

SKYLINE TRAIL

Visiting Mount Rainier National Park in winter truly feels like stepping inside a snow globe. The Skyline Trail is one of the park’s most iconic hikes, offering breathtaking views of Rainier and the surrounding peaks.

Paradise Road beyond Longmire is generally open Friday – Monday and closed Tuesday – Thursday. The gate from Longmire to Paradise typically opens to uphill traffic at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m. It’s recommended to be on your way out by 4:30 p.m., since the downhill gate closes at 5:00 p.m.

Conditions can change quickly, so always check the National Park Service website before you go for the latest updates. And don’t forget: from November 1 to May 1, all vehicles – including 4WD are required to carry tire chains.

FRANKLIN FALLS

Franklin Falls is about an hour from Seattle, near Snoqualmie Pass, and it’s absolutely magical in winter. The trail winds through snow-covered trees with beautiful views of the river along the way, and the waterfall, which drops 135 feet, is gorgeous in every season, but winter is my favorite.

Be sure to bring microspikes for this hike. The final descent to the falls can be extremely slippery. There’s also an avalanche chute to the left of the falls, so always use caution and know the conditions before you go. I often see people show up in UGGs or regular sneakers without traction. This is definitely a trail where coming prepared makes all the difference!

SCENIC HOT SPRINGS

Located along Highway 2, just west of Stevens Pass, Scenic Hot Springs offers one of the dreamiest winter soaking spots in Washington. There’s nothing quite like relaxing in a steaming hot spring while the world around you is covered in snow. In my opinion, it’s one of the best hot springs to visit in the state.

Because this area typically receives a lot of snowfall, be sure to bring microspikes and snowshoes. The springs are on private property, so reservations are required, and once you arrive, you’ll find designated changing areas and an outhouse available for visitors.

LAKE 22

Lake 22 is a classic Mountain Loop Highway hike that transforms into a magical winter wonderland. The trail begins through lush old-growth forest and steadily climbs toward the lake basin, offering glimpses of waterfalls and snow-dusted ridges along the way. 

Once you arrive, the view of the lake is incredible! It sits at the basin of the northern face of Mount Pilchuck and is easily one of my favorite winter hikes. Keep in mind there is avalanche terrain on this trail and around the lake so be sure to check current conditions prior to your adventure.

LAKE WENATCHEE

Located in the heart of the Cascade Mountains approximately 25 minutes from Leavenworth, Lake Wenatchee is a winter wonderland just waiting to be explored. The park has a North and South Entrance. While they both are beautiful, the north side is quieter and the south side is more open with a front row mountain view. Each side features a snowshoe trail loop under 3 miles round-trip, perfect for a winter outing.

From December 1 through March 31, Lake Wenatchee operates as a Sno-Park, which means Sno-Park permits are required (Discover Passes don’t apply during winter). Permits cost $25 per day or $50 for the season. You can purchase one HERE.

BIG FOUR ICE CAVES

Big Four Ice Caves is a stunning hike on Mountain Loop Highway with epic views of the Stillaguamish River and the towering face of Big Four Mountain!

In winter, the hike begins with a 2-mile road walk before reaching the trailhead, making the full route roughly 7 miles round-trip. Never go into or climb on the Ice Caves, they are extremely dangerous, and several people have lost their lives here.

SNOW LAKE

Snow Lake is a classic Alpine Lakes Wilderness hike just off Snoqualmie Pass that rewards you with one of Washington’s most stunning alpine lake views. I prefer tackling this trail early in the season, as it crosses avalanche terrain and includes a few steep sections.

Hikers should have experience navigating avalanche-prone areas and carry the proper gear. Parking permits are required from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends and holidays, so plan ahead before heading out.

WALLACE FALLS

Wallace Falls is a stunning hike along Highway 2 near Gold Bar, Washington, just about an hour from Seattle. The trail features three impressive waterfalls: Lower, Middle, and Upper. 

You’ll wind through a lush, green forest, cross a charming wooden bridge, and take in scenic river views along the way. The Middle Falls is my personal favorite, while the Upper Falls offers sweeping panoramic views of the Skykomish River Valley.

LOWER LENA LAKE

Lena Lake is located off Highway 101, north of Lake Cushman. One of the best things about this trail is that it’s typically snow-free year-round! The route winds through a lush forest filled with massive old-growth trees. 

Once you arrive, you can enjoy the views from the overlook or make your way down to the lake for a whole new perspective.

GOLD CREEK POND

Gold Creek Pond is a short and sweet loop hike near Snoqualmie Pass, Washington. The trail is flat and the surrounding mountain views are absolutely stunning! It’s the perfect adventure for beginners, kids, and families.

During winter, a Sno-Park permit is required for parking, and depending on snow levels, you may need to walk about half a mile to reach the lot if the gate is closed. Weekends can get quite busy, so if possible, plan your visit on a weekday morning for a more relaxed experience!

TWIN FALLS

Twin Falls is a breathtaking waterfall hike just off I-90 near North Bend. The first part of the trail follows the South Fork Snoqualmie River, winding through a lush forest filled with mossy trees and ferns.

As you approach the falls, a set of stairs on the right leads down to the bridge and offers an up-close view. It’s one of my personal favorites and feels especially magical on a rainy day!

HEATHER LAKE

Heather Lake is another classic Mountain Loop Highway hike that transforms into a winter wonderland. The trail starts along an old logging road, winding through old-growth forest, and as it begins to climb, you’ll encounter plenty of roots and rocks – sturdy shoes are essential!

On recent visits, I’ve also encountered a lot of running water along the trail, so I would definitely recommend wearing waterproof boots! Once you arrive at the lake it is absolutely stunning and sits beneath the towering cliffs of Mount Pilchuck. Be sure to do the full loop around the lake so you can check out all the different vantage points!

Whether you’re craving a relaxing escape, hoping to unplug for the weekend, or simply looking for wide-open spaces to explore, Long Beach offers the perfect coastal retreat.

HOW TO GET THERE

Getting to Long Beach, Washington is easy, it’s about a 3.5-hour drive from Seattle and just under 2.5 hours from Portland, making it a convenient coastal getaway.

WHERE TO STAY

On our most recent trip to Long Beach, we stayed at Boardwalk Cottages, part of the Adrift Hospitality family. This charming property offers a cozy, cottage-style stay with convenient amenities like an onsite sauna, bike rentals, and easy access to downtown Long Beach.

It’s just steps from Current Café, which has incredible breakfast burritos and lattes. Guests staying at the property also have full access to Adrift Hotel’s amenities, including the heated saline pool, relaxing spa services, and complimentary tasting flights at Adrift Distillery. Our cottage had a kitchenette and a fireplace, which was super cozy!

Other options for accommodations:

• Adrift Hotel – Another great option for Long Beach accommodations, Adrift Hotel offers a modern, industrial-coastal vibe with beautiful ocean views and a full lineup of wellness amenities.

WHAT TO DO

Explore the Long Beach Discovery Trail

The Discovery Trail is an 8.5-mile paved trail that runs from the Port of Ilwaco to Long Beach, offering a scenic way to explore the peninsula. The trail commemorates the Lewis & Clark expedition, which took place over 200 years ago, with several sculptures and historical markers along the route.

The path is mostly flat and paved, making it perfect for walking, running, or biking. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, grassy dunes, wetlands, and the North Head Lighthouse. There are multiple beach access points where you can stop to take in the scenery or dip your toes in the sand. HERE is a map of the trail.

While you can walk or run the trail, our favorite way to experience it is by bike. There are several local bike shops in Long Beach, including Beachin’ Bike Rentals, which offers regular bikes, tandem bikes, and e-bikes for exploring the trail at your own pace.

Explore Cape Disappointment State Park

Cape Disappointment State Park is anything but disappointing! One of our favorite things to do is hike the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse Viewpoint Trail, a roughly 1-mile roundtrip trail that leads to the historic lighthouse perched on the cliffs. Along the way, you can take the side trail down to Deadman’s Cove, a secluded beach that feels straight out of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The descent into the cove can be slippery, so be careful and watch your step!

The paved trail up to the lighthouse offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and passes an old military bunker along the way. While you’re in the area, make sure to stop by Waikiki Beach for a quick coastal stroll or some kite flying.

Treat Yourself to Ice Cream at Scoopers

Scoopers is the ultimate ice cream and candy shop in Long Beach. With over 40 flavors of ice cream, plus taffy and other sweet treats, there’s something for everyone. The scoop sizes are generous, so a single scoop is often plenty. It’s the perfect spot to grab a cone or a sweet snack while exploring downtown or the boardwalk.

Catch a Stunning Sunset on the 28-Mile Long Beach

Watching the sunset on Long Beach is a must-do experience. The wide, sandy shoreline and unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean make it the perfect spot for evening strolls or simply sitting back and soaking in the colors. For the best experience, arrive at least 30-45 minutes before sunset, this gives you time to find a good spot and enjoy the changing sky.

Visit the World Famous Kite Museum

The Kite Museum in Long Beach features fascinating exhibits from around the world, including a unique World War II kite exhibit that highlights how kites were used to pass messages and move supplies. Admission is just $5, and the museum has a gift shop where visitors can pick up souvenirs or kites to take to the beach.

Enjoy a Delicious Meal at Pickled Fish Restaurant

Pickled Fish, located inside Adrift Hotel, is the perfect spot for dinner or drinks with a stunning ocean view. We love their rockfish & chips, brussels sprouts, and the clam chowder is a must-try, plus their craft cocktails are always a hit.

Explore The Quirky Exhibits & Vintage Games at Marsh’s Free Museum

Marsh’s Free Museum is a quirky curiosity shop best known for its famous Jake the Alligator Man display. The museum is packed with oddities and fun exhibits, making it a must-visit stop while exploring the area. Make sure to bring some change – quarters, nickels, and dimes so you play all the fun games!

Check Out the Shops in Downtown Long Beach

Pacific Avenue is the heart of downtown Long Beach, lined with shops, restaurants, and fun stops to explore. Look for unique beach souvenirs, grab a bite to eat, or treat yourself to a scoop of ice cream or a sweet snack. A great rain or shine stop is the Funland Family Fun Center which has laser tag, virtual reality, and arcade games.

Snap a Pic in Front of the World’s Largest Frying Pan

As you stroll through town, be sure to spot the iconic frying pan. Back in 1941, Chef Wellington Marsh used it to make a giant clam fritter, and today it stands as a year-round tribute to the annual Razor Clam Festival, plus, it makes a fun backdrop for a photo!

Enjoy a Tasting Flight at Adrift Distillers

If you’re visiting Long Beach, make sure Adrift Distillers is on your list! They’re known for their small-batch, coastal-inspired spirits and their tasting flights are such a fun way to try a little bit of everything. If you’re staying at an Adrift Hospitality property, you even get a free daily tasting. They also make a fantastic Bloody Mary mix, we brought a bottle home on our last trip, and I definitely recommend you do the same.

Take a Stroll on the Boardwalk

A scenic half-mile stretch through rolling grassy dunes, perfect for a sunset stroll or enjoying ice cream on a nice day. Currently under construction, the boardwalk is expected to reopen in March 2026.

Attend a Festival or Event

• Razor Clam Festival – Held every April, this annual event is a celebration of everything razor clam! Visitors can enjoy free clam digging lessons and cleaning demonstrations, a clam chowder taste-off, crab races, a giant slide, face painting, live music, and a variety of food trucks and local vendors.
• Washington State International Kite Festival – Held every August, this world-famous festival fills the skies with hundreds of colorful kites. Highlights include choreographed kite performances, mass ascensions, night kite shows, and plenty of opportunities for spectators to try flying kites themselves.
• Sandsations Sand Sculpture Festival – Takes place in July, this festival brings together professional and amateur sand sculptors to create massive, intricate works of art right on the beach. It’s a must-see for art lovers and families alike.
• Long Beach Rodeo – Also held in July, this classic Western-style rodeo features bull riding, barrel racing, a parade, and plenty of family-friendly entertainment. It’s a lively way to experience the local culture and community spirit of the peninsula.

WHEN TO VISIT

The best time to visit Long Beach, Washington really depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and activities.

If you’re after sunny skies and warm temperatures, plan your trip for July through August. This is the peak tourist season, so expect more crowds, but you’ll get the best weather for beach walks, kite flying, and outdoor adventures.

For a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons: May-June or September-October. The temperatures are cooler, but the beaches are peaceful and the scenery is beautiful. On our last visit in late September, we enjoyed a gorgeous sunny weekend that was perfect for exploring and photography.

No matter the season, there’s something magical about Long Beach year-round, from its expansive sandy shoreline to the charming coastal vibes, it’s always worth a visit!

SAVOR AUTHENTIC TACOS AT MOM’S TACOS

If you’re a taco lover, Mom’s Tacos in Buckley is a must-visit! This local gem serves up authentic Mexican cuisine packed with bold flavors and fresh ingredients. We couldn’t get enough of the birria tacos!

The menu features a lineup of traditional Mexican dishes, including tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and tamales, all expertly paired with homemade salsas and hot sauces. If you are craving authentic Mexican food swing by Mom’s Tacos, you won’t be disappointed!

SHOP AT LOCAL MAIN STREET BOUTIQUES

Buckley’s Main Street is lined with charming, locally-owned boutiques. Whether you’re hunting for a statement piece, the perfect gift, or just love to browse, you’ll find plenty of treasures here.

Enjoy classic ice cream flavors, fresh mini donuts, and savory snacks like pretzels and hot dogs. It’s the perfect place to relax and treat yourself after exploring! You can also kick back outside with plenty of seating and fun outdoor games to enjoy.

INDULGE IN A BREAKFAST PIZZA AT MAIN STREET BISTRO

Main Street Bistro is a family-owned, family-friendly bar and restaurant right on Main Street. It’s a local favorite for its cozy atmosphere, welcoming staff, and a menu that hits all the comfort food notes. They serve great food, wine, spirits, and even have a full espresso bar. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast here and loved the New Mexico Breakfast Burrito and the Feed Store Breakfast Pizza.

STEP BACK IN TIME AT THE FOOTHILLS HISTORICAL MUSEUM

The Foothills Historical Museum is a fascinating stop that showcases Buckley’s rich history. Run by local volunteers, the museum features thoughtfully curated exhibits like a vintage schoolroom, general store, a working printshop and a telephone exhibit that includes a 1940 pay phone booth. Admission is free and It’s a fun and educational way to see what life was like in the early days of the town.

Just across the street from the Foothills Museum main building, you’ll also find a restored fire lookout tower originally from Salmon River Ridge. The structure was mistakenly built in 1967 on Quinault Nation Lands and moved to the Buckley Museum in 2000. Visitors are welcome to climb the tower year-round.

EVENTS & SEASONAL ATTRACTIONS

• Buckley Log Show – This lively small-town tradition takes place in late June and celebrates the area’s logging heritage.
• Annual Wine Walk – Every September, downtown Buckley comes alive with wine tastings, live music, and even a little line dancing. Local businesses host stops along the way, making it a fun, social evening out.

Visiting Mount Rainier National Park in the winter months is like stepping into a snow globe. It is the perfect destination for a scenic road trip and there are typically less tourists which is also a perk! From frozen waterfalls and snow-covered evergreens to panoramic mountain views, this guide will help you plan the ultimate winter road trip through one of Washington’s most iconic national parks!

TIPS FOR VISITING MT. RAINIER NATIONAL PARK IN WINTER

Before you embark on your adventure, here are some important tips to keep in mind:

• 🚗 Tire Chains Are Required – All vehicles (including four-wheel drive) must carry tire chains from November 1 to May 1.
• 🛣️ Paradise Road Access – The road past Longmire to Paradise is only open Friday through Monday and is closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
• ⏰ Gate Hours – The gate from Longmire to Paradise opens to uphill traffic at 9 AM and closes at 4 PM. It’s recommended to leave the park by 4:30 PM, as the downhill gate closes at 5 PM.
• ☀️ Shorter Daylight Hours – Plan accordingly, as winter days are shorter, and you’ll want to maximize your time exploring.
• ⚠️ Check Conditions Before You Go – Always visit the NPS website before heading out to get the latest road and weather updates.
• 🌿 Passes – To visit Mt. Rainier National Park in winter, you’ll need a National Park Pass or America the Beautiful Pass. You can purchase one HERE.

LONGMIRE MUSEUM

Start your adventure with a visit to Longmire Museum, located about 6 miles past the national park entrance, to learn about Mt. Rainier’s rich history. This charming museum provides a range of displays and insight into the early days of the park, making it a great place to gain some historical context before continuing your journey. Make sure to check online for the latest hours of operation before your visit!

CHRISTINE FALLS

Next make a quick stop at Christine Falls, an easy pull-off from the road. This picturesque waterfall cascades beneath a historic stone bridge, creating a postcard-perfect view and a must-see photo spot as you enter the park.

While Christine Falls has a total drop of 69 feet, the most iconic and visible section, framed by the bridge, stands at 37 feet. Parking is limited, so be mindful, but spots tend to open up quickly.

NARADA FALLS

Standing at 176 feet, Narada Falls is one of Mt. Rainier National Park’s most impressive waterfalls. In winter, it transforms into a breathtaking icy cascade, making for a dramatic and photogenic stop on your journey.

The trail is approximately 0.2 miles roundtrip and 59 ft. elevation gain. It can get slippery so use caution as you are exploring! More info HERE.

HENRY M. JACKSON MEMORIAL VISITOR CENTER

Make sure to stop by the Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center during your visit to Mt. Rainier National Park. This welcoming spot offers a gift shop for souvenirs, a snack bar, and fascinating exhibits on the park’s geology, wildlife, and ecosystems.

It’s also a great place to warm up while enjoying breathtaking mountain views. Be sure to check online for current hours of operation before your trip!

TOP SNOWSHOEING TRAILS IN MT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK

There are plenty of options for all skill levels, but it’s crucial to stay aware of avalanche danger in the area. Some spots are more susceptible to avalanches than others. Be sure to check the current avalanche risk before heading out.

NATIONAL PARK INN

After taking in the beauty of the park, head to the National Park Inn for a warm meal or a cozy drink by the fire. I highly recommend ordering one of their Campfire Cups, the Nisqually Nudge (a mix of coffee liquor, brandy, crème de cacao, coffee, and whipped cream) is my personal favorite! It’s also a wonderful place to stay if you are looking to stay the night and don’t feel like making the drive back home!

• Paradise Village Hotel – Known for their iconic Cannibal Hot Tub over an open fire! Located just 5 minutes from Mt Rainier National Park Entrance. I have yet to visit, but I am hoping to check it out later this year!

Winter is one of the most magical seasons in Washington! The sunrises just hit differently and the snow covered mountain peaks are absolutely stunning! While winter in Washington can feel long, getting outdoors is the perfect way to embrace its beauty and support your physical & mental health. Here are 7 must-do winter activities in Washington State!

DISCOVER LAKE WENATCHEE STATE PARK

Nestled in the heart of the Cascade Mountains approximately 25 minutes from Leavenworth, Lake Wenatchee is a winter wonderland just waiting to be explored. There is a North and South Entrance. While they both are beautiful, the north side is quieter and the south side is more open with a front row mountain view.

Each side features a snowshoe trail loop under 3 miles round-trip:

• North Snowshoe Trail
• South Snowshoe Trail

Each winter season, from Dec. 1 through Mar. 31, Lake Wenatchee becomes a Sno-Park and Sno-Park permits are required. Discover Passes are not valid during this time. Snow park permits are $25 per day or $50 annually.  You can purchase one HERE.

For winter visits, I would recommend an all-wheel drive vehicle. I also like to check out the live camera for current conditions HERE.

RELAX & UNWIND IN A NATURAL HOT SPRING

There’s nothing quite like soaking in a natural hot spring while surrounded by a snowy winter wonderland.

In my opinion, Scenic Hot Springs is one of the best hot springs to visit in Washington! The hike to get there is about four miles round trip with approximately 1,100 feet of elevation gain. Be sure to pack microspikes and snowshoes as the area typically receives quite a bit of snowfall!

Since these hot springs sit on private property, you’ll need a reservation to visit. It’s $20 per person, or you can book the entire space for your group for $375

STROLL THROUGH THE ENCHANTING STREETS OF LEAVENWORTH

Leavenworth, Washington, is a charming Bavarian-style village tucked in the Cascade Mountains. It’s basically like stepping into a snow globe! Enjoy local breweries and wineries, authentic german food and wander through the town’s charming shops.

Each winter, Leavenworth dazzles with over half a million lights, illuminating the town daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, from Thanksgiving through the end of February!

December can get really busy. I actually prefer to visit in January or February. You still get to experience the lights, but with fewer crowds, making for a more peaceful winter getaway.

EMBARK ON A SNOWSHOEING ADVENTURE

Snowshoeing is one of the best ways to experience Washington’s stunning winter landscapes! There are countless trails across the state and it’s much easier to pick up compared to skiing or snowboarding.

For an unforgettable snowshoeing experience, head to the Paradise area in Mount Rainier National Park. Surrounded by towering, snow-capped peaks and breathtaking winter scenery, you will quickly realize why they call it paradise!

It is a destination that will leave you in awe. The area offers a variety of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails, all with spectacular views of the mountains and forests. Always visit the NPS website before heading out to get the latest road and weather updates.

The Summit Tubing Park at Snoqualmie offers fun for all ages and is a must-visit winter destination! Ride the magic carpet to the top, enjoy the 20 groomed tubing lanes, and take in the epic mountain views while you glide down.

Tickets range from $20-$52 per person for a 1 hour 45-minute session. Pro Tip: Make sure to book in advance, as spots fill up quickly! Also, it’s always a good idea to check current conditions before heading out and don’t forget to bring an extra set of clothes, things can get a little wet!

HIT THE SLOPES

Washington is home to some of the best ski resorts in the Pacific Northwest! Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll find the perfect terrain to match your skill level.

Popular spots like Summit at Snoqualmie, Crystal Mountain, and Stevens Pass are all easily accessible from Seattle and provide fantastic skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

HOW TO GET THERE

Das Tree Haus is approximately a two-hour drive from Seattle via HWY 2, or about two and a half hours if you opt for I-90. The property is located just off Chumstick Highway. 

Cell service can be spotty in this area, so I would recommend downloading an offline map ahead of time just to be safe! If you are planning to visit in winter, you are required to have 4WD/AWD and chains for safe travel.

INSIDE THE CABIN

Living Area – At 450 square feet, Das Tree Haus offers a cozy yet thoughtfully designed layout. The main living area features an open-plan design with a comfortable couch, a smart TV with streaming capabilities, plus a selection of DVDs and games to enjoy.

Private Deck – Spectacular views of the Wenatchee River and Icicle Ridge!! There is ample seating and a propane fire pit, an ideal space to relax and unwind. Start your mornings with a cup of coffee while enjoying the serene views, and after a day of adventure, relax and unwind in the hot tub!

Kitchen & Dining – The fully equipped kitchen includes a microwave, dishwasher, oven, stovetop, and all the essentials you need for cooking. There’s also a cozy table for two with a window view.

Laundry – A washer and dryer are available for guests to use.

Sleeping – The bedroom is furnished with a queen-size bed, though we found during our visit last year that the mattress might benefit from an upgrade.

The Bathroom – The space features a full bathroom with a tub, along with a door that opens to the wraparound deck and covered area.

If you’re visiting during the summer, you should definitely consider hiking Colchuck Lake! This stunning trail is one of the most beautiful in Washington State! The hike is 8.7 miles round-trip and 2,342 ft elevation gain. Find out more trail details and check current conditions HERE.

Explore Leavenworth Reindeer Farm

Leavenworth Reindeer Farm is a family-run business that offers a unique and interactive experience where visitors can meet and feed reindeer in a safe, enclosed environment. Tours typically last about an hour and are available year-round, with seasonal events like “Christmas in July” and visits from Santa.

The farm also has a concession stand that serves coffee, Alaskan reindeer sausage and hand rolled Norwegian potato lefsewith. In addition to reindeer, you’ll find a variety of other animals, including camels, chickens, bunnies, turkeys, and more! For more information, check out their website HERE.

Hit The Slopes At Stevens Pass

Just 40 minutes away, Stevens Pass offers fantastic slopes for winter sports enthusiasts, with a variety of runs perfect for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Buy tickets and check current conditions HERE.

Visit Lake Wenatchee State Park

Lake Wenatchee is a picturesque destination known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning mountain backdrop. It offers a variety of outdoor activities year-round, including boating, fishing, hiking, and winter sports. It is a great place to go snowshoeing or cross country skiing in the winter!

Tofino is a small town located on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It’s known for its rugged coastline, beautiful beaches, outdoor adventures and laid back surfer vibes. My husband and I recently visited and today I’m going to share 10 things you can’t miss, where to stay and what to pack!

HOW TO GET THERE

Getting to Tofino is part of the adventure! To reach Tofino by car, you must travel from the mainland to Vancouver Island’s east coast by ferry to either Victoria or Nanaimo.

Tofino is approximately 196 miles northwest of Victoria (4 hrs, 20 min) and 129 miles west of Nanaimo (3 hrs). If you plan on visiting anytime between October 1 and March 31, you must have winter tires or carry chains.

People flying into Tofino typically arrive at Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ). However, it serves mostly private planes and there are limited commercial flights.

We traveled from the Seattle area so we opted to take the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, and then made the drive to Tofino. The whole trip took around 10 hours, including the ferry ride, a few scenic viewpoints and some pit stops along the way.

WHERE TO STAY

On our latest trip we stayed at Hotel Zed. The property has a swanky 1970’s vibe. A couple of things we loved about this property was the barrel sauna, hot tub and the amazing restaurant on-site, ROAR!

When I visited in March I stayed at Tofino Resort & Marina. The location was great and the restaurant on-site, Shelter is amazing! If I were to stay here again I would definitely book a room with a balcony.

WHAT TO DO

1. Tofino Brewing Co

Located in the heart of Tofino, this local gem offers a diverse selection of handcrafted beers. Fun fact- Tofino Brewing Co. uses hydroelectric power for all its brewery operations, making its beer production carbon emission-free.

Visitors can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, sample unique brews, and learn about the brewing process, making it a perfect stop for a taste of Tofino’s vibrant craft beer scene. And if you’re a fan of cider, don’t worry—they’ve got a couple of options to choose from as well.

2. Chocolate Tofino

If you are craving something sweet, then be sure to check out Chocolate Tofino! They’re known for their handcrafted chocolates, gelato and home made treats. We have visited several times to enjoy their delicious gelato, and the Salted Caramel Sundae is one of our favorites!

3. Take a hike!

Tofino offers a variety of scenic trails through lush rainforests, rugged coastlines and beautiful beaches. Here are a few I highly recommend exploring!

TOP TOFINO HIKING TRAILS

• Cox Bay Lookout – The trail begins at the southern end of Cox Bay Beach and can be quite challenging with its steep and uneven terrain. However, the spectacular views at the top make it well worth the effort
• Canso Bomber Ruins Trail– An epic hike that leads you to an abandoned plane crash site from WWll! Thankfully all 12 crew members survived the crash. Such a fascinating historic place to explore!
• Tonquin Trail –  If you’re looking for an easy, relaxing nature walk, this trail is perfect for you. The trail winds through old-growth forests, offering several beautiful viewpoints and access to three different beaches to explore!
• Rainforest Loop Trail – I prefer to explore this trail on a rainy day. It features two scenic loops on boardwalks, one on each side of the highway, surrounded by massive trees, forest flora, and many shades of green.

4. Shelter Restaurant

Situated on the waterfront at Tofino Resort & Marina, Shelter Restaurant is a great place to grab a bite to eat. If it’s a nice day, I would recommend grabbing a seat on the patio so you can take in the views. Be sure to try the Surf Bowl (Tofu & Salmon are both delicious) and the truffle fries. It’s definitely a memorable spot for both locals and visitors.

5. Hot Springs Cove

Accessible only by boat or seaplane, Hot Springs Cove is a natural hot spring located in Maquinna Provincial Park. Many companies offer tours to the springs, we booked ours through Tofino Resort and Marina, which offers a wide range of excursions.

The journey to the springs is absolutely breathtaking and takes about 90 minutes. On our tour we spotted several sea otters and even a whale! Upon reaching Maquinna Provincial Park, it is a 30 minute walk along a scenic boardwalk through an old-growth forest to get to the springs. At the end of the trail, there are changing rooms where you can prepare for your soak.

The springs feature several hot pools and even a waterfall! We were able to spend about 90 minutes relaxing in the springs; the water felt amazing and the ocean views were absolutely stunning. It was definitely an unforgettable experience. If you’re planning a trip to Tofino, a visit to Hot Springs Cove is a must!

6. Tofino Distillery

Tofino distillery offers an impressive lineup of Certified Organic Spirits. They offer flights of liquor and cocktails. Be sure to try the Psychedelic Jellyfish Absinthe!

7. Watch Sunset on the beach

Experiencing the sunset from one of Tofino’s many beaches is a must! Rain or shine, you’re likely to enjoy a beautiful view. Top spots for watching the sunset include Chesterman Beach, Long Beach, McKenzie Beach, Cox Bay, and Middle Beach.

8. Rhino Coffee House

Rhino Coffee House serves high-quality coffee made from locally sourced beans and is located in downtown Tofino. They serve breakfast all day and are known for their signature donuts and delicious sandwiches!

9. JeJu

JeJu is a family-owned Korean restaurant situated in downtown Tofino. The restaurant is cozy so I would definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time! When we visited we ordered the Galbi, which is a 35 day aged, short rib dinner for 2 served with various side dishes. It was absolutely delicious and I would definitely recommend giving it a try!

10. Surfing

Tofino offers year-round surfing and is considered one of the best surf destinations in Canada. The area caters to all skill levels, with several local spots (Pacific Surf Company, Surf Sister, and Tofino Surf Adventures) offering lessons for beginners and board rentals for those who prefer to enjoy the waves on their own. 

Popular surf spots include Long Beach, famous for its vast sandy shoreline, and Chesterman Beach, which features both gentle waves for novices and more challenging breaks for experienced surfers. Cox Bay is another favorite, known for its breathtaking natural scenery. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a beginner looking to catch your first wave, Tofino’s diverse surf spots promise an unforgettable experience.

If you prefer to watch rather than surf, head to Long Beach Lodge on Cox Bay Beach. It features a relaxing outdoor area where you can sip a cocktail, take in the stunning views, and watch the surfers in action.

WHEN TO VISIT

Tofino is stunning year-round! Summer is ideal for beach outings, surfing, and hiking, while fall and winter offer a serene experience with dramatic coastal storms. Spring also provides mild weather, blooming wildflowers, and fewer crowds.  Each offers its own unique experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to visit any time of year.

I personally prefer to visit in the shoulder season either in April/May or Late Sept/October to avoid the peak tourist crowds and enjoy optimal weather conditions.

Matt and I explored the town a few weekends ago and today I’m going to be revealing the top things to do including best hikes, beaches, where to stay and what to pack!

HOW TO GET THERE

Cannon Beach is situated along Highway 101 roughly 4 hours from Seattle or 90 minutes from Portland.

WHERE TO STAY

On our trip we stayed at Cannon Beach Hotel Collection. They have 4 different boutique hotels- Cannon Beach Hotel, The Courtyard, McBee Cottages, and the Hearthstone Inn. We booked a room in the McBee Cottages. The room has everything you would need if you’re looking to spend a few days at the beach. The location was also perfect because it was within walking distance to haystack rock and the downtown area.

Other options for accommodations:

• Hallmark Resort – I’ve personally never stayed at this resort, but I’ve heard fantastic reviews about it. However, it does come with a higher price tag. If you’re looking to splurge or are celebrating a special occasion, it’s definitely worth considering!
• Inn at Cannon Beach – Complimentary breakfast, 20 minute walk to Haystack Rock 
• Surfsand Resort  – Oceanfront, top choice for families, heated swimming pool/hot tub, sauna, 10 minute walk to Haystack Rock
• Schooner’s Cove Inn – Oceanfront, located in the heart of cannon beach, 22 minute walk to Haystack Rock
• Lighthouse Inn  – Spacious rooms & kitchenettes, great for families, 10 minute walk to Haystack Rock

WHAT TO DO

Explore Haystack Rock

Take a stroll on the beach, marvel at the towering sea stack, check out the tide pools at its base, and snap some photos against the stunning backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.

Ecola State Park

Lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails at Ecola State Park. Enjoy panoramic views of the coastline, explore old-growth forests, and keep an eye out for wildlife such as deer, eagles, and whales.

Parking costs 5$ per vehicle– they have pay stations that accept credit cards near the parking area. 

If you are looking for Incredible views without a lot of effort just head over to the view point. 

If you want to work a little harder for a view, there are multiple hikes to choose from, with two of the most popular ones being the Clatsop Loop trail from Indian Beach, and Ecola Point to Indian Beach.

We opted for the less crowded route and decided to take the trail down to Crescent Beach! This trail is steep and can be slippery, so if you decide to do this one, watch your step and be careful!

Pelican Brewing

Pelican Brewing offers a wide array of craft beers on tap and welcomes families and dogs. During our visit, we savored a cup of clam chowder, indulged in a couple of Mexican coffees, and shared the flavorful teriyaki burger. The food at Pelican Brewing impressed us, and we’re already looking forward to returning for another amazing dining experience.

MacGregor’s Whiskey Bar

Located inside the main hotel lobby (of Cannon Beach Hotel Collection) is MacGregor’s Whiskey Bar. We stopped in for a quick bite to eat and Matt wanted to sample some allocated bourbon. The bar had an extensive selection of whiskeys to choose from and the food did not disappoint.

Hug Point Recreation Area

Hug Point is known for its sandstone cliffs, hidden sea caves and a waterfall that descends onto the beach. This was one of my favorite places that we explored during our trip. There’s a ton of history here! Back in the day, Stagecoaches used to travel the beach before the highway was built. As the name “Hug Point” suggests, the stagecoaches had to hug the coastline to avoid the incoming tide. 

You can even walk along the original road and see the marks from the wheel ruts that are carved into the rocks! Make sure you check the tides before visiting and be careful because the rocks are extremely slippery.

To reach the waterfall, head north on the beach and walk for approximately half a mile.

Driftwood Restaurant & Lounge

On our last night we went to dinner at Driftwood Restaurant and Lounge. We ordered a cup of clam chowder, the prime rib and fish and chips. The service and food was top notch.

Sea Level Coffee

This cozy cafe offers scratched bake goods, sourdough bread, exceptional coffee and an inviting outdoor patio space.

Downtown Cannon Beach

Shop and Dine in Downtown Cannon Beach. Along Hemlock Street, you will find several charming shops, galleries and boutiques. It’s a great place to pick up unique souvenirs, locally-made crafts, and artwork inspired by the Oregon coast. After shopping, indulge in one of the town’s many restaurants and cafes. 

If you’re looking for fish and chips on a budget, Tom’s Fish & Chips is the place to go. If you’re craving an afternoon pick me up or a smoothie, I would recommend checking out Oasis Cafe.

Cannon Beach Bakery is the place to go for a sweet treat. Matt indulged in a butter cookie from the bakery and he absolutely loved it. 😋🍪

Oswald West State Park

Oswald West State Park is located about 10 minutes south of Cannon Beach and is full of beautiful hiking trails through lush coastal forests. We checked out the ½ mile Short Sand Beach trail which leads to stunning limestone cliffs and there’s even a waterfall on the beach. For the best experience I would recommend exploring the area at low tide!

• South Neahkahnie Mountain Trail

Attend Festivals or Events

Cannon Beach hosts a range of festivals and events throughout the year, including the Sandcastle Contest, Spring Unveiling Arts Festival, and Stormy Weather Arts Festival. Check the event calendar to see what’s happening during your visit.

WHEN TO VISIT

The best time to visit Cannon Beach depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and activities. 

If you’re looking for sunny and warm temperatures you are going to want to visit July-August. However, this is the peak tourist season in Cannon Beach so be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices for hotels.

For mild weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons May-June or September-October. During these times, you’ll still enjoy pleasant temperatures and have a better chance of finding accommodations without breaking the bank.

November-February brings cooler temperatures and the possibility of rain, but it’s also a quieter time to explore the area.

We visited in mid-January. It rained quite a bit during our trip, but on the flip side there weren’t many people and we didn’t need to make any dinner reservations. Regardless of the season, I think there’s something special about Cannon Beach year-round.

St. Petersburg sits on the West coast of Florida on the Pinellas peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It’s known for its laid back vibes, white-sand beaches and vibrant arts scene. My husband and I recently visited and today I’m going to share the best things to do in the area, where to stay, what to pack for your trip and more!

HOW TO GET THERE

There are two major airports – St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) and Tampa International Airport (TPA). Both offer non-stop flights. On our trip we flew into TPA and spent a few days exploring Tampa Bay and then drove 25 minutes to St. Pete for the remainder of our stay.

WHERE TO STAY

We stayed at St. Pete Beach Suites. This hotel wasn’t anything fancy but it does have everything you would need and it is only a few steps away from the beach! One thing we loved was that they had wagons, beach chairs and umbrellas for guests to easily borrow. Another pro is that there is a pool and it is within walking distance to several restaurants, bars and shops.

• Dolphin Beach Resort

WHAT TO DO

Grove Surf & Coffee

Grove Surf & Coffee can be found in the Corey Avenue Shopping District. Throughout our trip, we frequented this spot at least three times. I highly suggest trying the Salted Caramel Latte and Honey Cinnamon Latte. Additionally, they have a small shop with a variety of clothing and accessories from local vendors.

Don CeSar

The Don CeSar, also known as the “Pink Palace”, is a historic and luxury resort. It first opened in 1928 and over time the hotel has served as a sanitarium, a military hospital during WWll and a home for government offices. It eventually was abandoned, and just months before it was to be demolished it was purchased and restored.

There are rumors the hotel is haunted by the ghost of Thomas Rowe (the original owner.) We walked around the resort, explored the grounds, and checked out the beach. The property is charming and we would definitely consider staying here in the future.

Fairgrounds St. Pete

Fairgrounds St. Pete is a museum located in St. Pete’s Warehouse Arts District encompassing over 15,000 sq. ft. of space! It is filled with immersive exhibits featuring works from local & global artists. If you are looking for something fun and adventurous, then fairgrounds St. Pete is the perfect destination.

Pier Teaki

Located in downtown St. Pete is Pier Teaki, which has a modern take on the classic tiki bar. We stopped here for a couple of drinks and a light dinner. We ordered the Dip Trio and signature smash burger- the food was amazing! The drinks were a little overpriced but the views were stunning and it was definitely one of the more memorable dining experiences on our trip.

The restaurant is located at the end of the pier, so It’s a bit of a walk from the parking lot but they also have a shuttle that is free and runs from each stop, approximately every 10 minutes.

Upham Beach

Upham Beach features a wide stretch of sandy shoreline situated along the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a great place to soak up the sun, go swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and enjoying the gentle waves of the Gulf.  Other beaches you may want to check out- Clearwater Beach, Madeira Beach, St. Pete Beach, Pass-a-Grille Beach and Treasure Island.

Crabby Bill’s

If you are looking for a spot to grab lunch or dinner with a view of the beach (and reasonably priced drinks), head to Crabby Bill’s. I would recommend going upstairs to the rooftop bar and ordering the Bacardi Rum Runner cocktail with a Rum Floater. While we were savoring our meal we even spotted some dolphins off in the distance.

Buoy’s Waterfront Bar & Grill

If you’re in search of a breakfast spot with a waterfront view, then look no further than Buoy’s Bar & Grill. This place offers both indoor and outdoor seating, along with games like cornhole and Jenga. While we were enjoying our breakfast there were numerous pelicans diving for fish which added to the experience. 

John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk

John’s Pass is a waterfront village located in Madeira Beach. It has a wide wide variety of shops and restaurants. Definitely a great place to shop for a souvenir and get a bite to eat! If you are looking to get out on the water they also have parasailing excursions and boat/jet ski rentals! 

The Salvador Dalí Museum

Immerse yourself in the artistic brilliance and unravel the mysteries of Salvador Dalí’s mind at The Salvador Dalí Museum. In addition to Dalí’s works, the museum features pieces by his peers, including Monet, Matisse, Gauguin and more. Don’t miss the chance to capture a photo at the interactive  Dalí Selfie spot! It can get busy, so it’s always a good idea to buy tickets online ahead of time. More information can be found HERE.

Agave Restaurant

If you’re craving a margarita or mezcalita, be sure to swing by Agave Restaurant! They have a wide selection of tequila and mezcal. Both of our drinks were fantastic and we loved the atmosphere and vibe here. 

82 Degrees

If you are looking for a great spot to grab dinner with sunset views then make sure you check out 82 Degrees. (If you decide to stay at St. Pete Beach Suites, this restaurant is just down the street.)  It is located in the Saint Hotel. Here are a few items I would recommend- the French Onion Soup, St Pete Smash Burger and Black Grouper. This was another memorable dining experience on our trip and we would definitely visit again!

La Casa Del Pane

Take a step into Italy at La Casa Del Pane. They have excellent coffee and a large assortment of pastries! We ordered the Lobster Tail & Bomboloni With-Crema and they did not disappoint! They also sell an array of fresh foods, sandwiches, pizzas and Italian grocery items.

WHAT TO PACK

St. Pete generally has a humid subtropical climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year. We visited in early November and we thought the weather was absolutely perfect- average temps during the day were in the High 70’s / Low 80’s. Make sure if you are traveling outside of the summer months to bring a light jacket for the late evenings and early mornings.

• 🩴 Flip Flops: If you plan to visit the beach, having a pair of flip-flops is a must.
• 📱 Portable Charger: I can’t tell you how many times this has saved me! It’s compact size makes it great for portability and charging on the go.
• 📸 Camera: I am always impressed by the quality of the photos and videos captured using this camera. It’s an excellent hybrid option for both photography and videography.
